The most common way to make Portland cement is by a dry method. The first step is to extract the main raw materials, mainly limestone, clay and other materials.

After extraction, the rock is crushed. The first crushing reduces the rock to a maximum size of approximately 6 inches. The rock then goes to secondary crushers or hammer mills to reduce it to about 3 inches or less. The manufacture of concrete is quite simple.

First, cement (usually Portland cement) is prepared. The other ingredients, aggregates (such as sand or gravel), additives (chemical additives), necessary fibers, and water are then mixed with the cement to form the concrete. The concrete is then sent to the job site and placed, compacted and cured. A cement is a binder, a substance used for construction that sets, hardens, and adheres to other materials to bind them together.

Cement is rarely used alone, but rather to bond sand and gravel (aggregates). Cement mixed with fine aggregates produces mortar for masonry, or with sand and gravel, produces concrete. Concrete is the most widely used material today and is only behind water as the most consumed resource on the planet. While the terms are often used interchangeably, cement and concrete are not, in fact, the same.

For example, the slab base of your house is likely to be made of concrete, and the concrete was made with cement and other ingredients. Concrete is a mixture of cement, aggregate and water. Its appeal includes the fact that the components for manufacturing it are almost universally available, as well as its strength and durability that make it a practical and desirable building material. Cement, by comparison, is mainly used in smaller jobs (e.g., grouting and specialty masonry) and in repairing cracked or crumbled concrete. It depends on your project, but unless you need a grout-like material for very small areas, in which case you would use cement, you probably want to use concrete. Does a backyard patio serve? Concrete. Putting up posts for a fence? Concrete.

Cement is no stronger than concrete. On its own, in fact, cement is prone to cracking. However, when combined with aggregate materials and water and allowed to harden, cement is now extraordinarily strong. Driveways are usually made of concrete.

Concrete, of course, is composed of cement, aggregates and water. Therefore, while you could say that an entrance “contains cement”, I would more accurately say that the entrance is made of concrete. Some long driveways may be constructed of asphalt, which is a softer material that breaks down faster. Cement is used only in fairly narrow applications, mainly as a grout when mixed with water.

The use of concrete in construction grew rapidly starting in 1850, and soon became the dominant use for cements.

Ready-mix concrete suppliers and on-site engineer extensively use quality control tables to continuously assess concrete strength. Aggregates, which comprise 75 percent of concrete by volume, improve cement paste formation and flow and improve concrete structural performance. Because this type of concrete is sometimes transported in a shaker truck, it is also known as transit mixed concrete. The cement is now ready to be transported to ready-mix concrete companies for use in a variety of construction projects.
